About the GOAL Framework

The Growth-Oriented Assessment for Learning (GOAL) Framework is a values-based pedagogical framework being developed by Iris S. De Lis at Portland State University, inspired by and in community with a national community of practice as part of the SCIENCE Collaborative.

The aim is nothing less than to reimagine learning assessment in higher education, building from decades of scholarship across ungrading, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), labor-based, multimodal engagement, specifications grading, trauma-informed pedagogy, and anti-oppressive teaching practices.

The field of learning assessment reform is thriving precisely because of this vibrant and expansive interplay of models, experiments, and communities of practice. Just as GOAL is both rooted in and contributing to this shared work, we hope to welcome more scholars and practitioners to join in collaborating and shaping what comes next.
